Here is a image of what we had at the gardens this morning, the garlic is just superb! And this image really shows the array of beautiful food colours !
We are back on for our regular Saturday food swap and catch up, the kitchen plans are going well and the gardens are adapting well to the dry conditions. Check out this method of supporting climbing beans! Bailing twine and bamboo! The chooks enjoyed a romp on a new bed recently, its great to see how they love some fresh pickings, its important to keep rotating our chooks around the garden beds as they play a critical role in nutrient cycling for a healthy soil, and keep the bugs and grubs contained! Not to mention the lovely eggs.
A great 8 part small documentary well worth a watch it has some lovely stories that are so important to share and a great coming together of communities. Here is the link to part 1 then do a search to find the others on SBS on Demand.
From the notorious Brownlie Towers public housing estate comes a new beginning for the residents – a community garden. The estate was originally hailed as a triumph of innovative design and community housing when it was built in the 1970s, but the project failed and the Towers became known throughout Perth as the ‘suicide towers’. We learn about the genesis of the Bentley Community Garden and see the site as it was in the beginning – an empty lot. Visit www.facebook.com/SBSHarvest
Here are some images on what turned out to be a great day! Discussions of sustainable movements and local food! What a great place to host this event with the local children and families being able to take part in all the activities. The gardens had a great day showcasing what we have to offer as well as connecting with some great local groups.
